President Obama to Sign Hate Crime Bill Into Law
Friends! Groundbreaking news! The United States of America Senate has voted 68-29 to send a bill to the desk of President Barack Obama to sign a bill to make it a federal crime to assault an individual because of his or her sexual orientation or gender identity.
The bill, named after Matthew Shepard, a teenager from Wyoming who was kidnapped and beaten to death, and James Byrd Jr. , a person of color and tragically dragged to his death in Texas in the same year of 1998, is a HUGE milestone for our community. It is unbelievable to imagine that this happens all too often; some of us have been victims. However, once the President signs this bill into law, all who have been victims, all of those who have lost their lives, all of those who insist and instill the idea that this is nothing but in reality it has shattered the thousands of lives in our GLBT communities and households, will be at rest and at edge because it will now be a federal crime.
Friends, our cause for equality is soon to come. When we all gather our minds and causes together, our front is unstoppable! Please be encouraged by this. It’s a step towards the liberties that we all deserve.

We have a long way to go, but like I said, be encouraged!

Hey, now whenever someone mouths off, strikes or harms another individual and gets their asses kicked, they can hide behind another piece of bullshit legislation to sue someone else and live their lives poshly…get over it. You are just like the rest of us right? No difference, just normal human beings living their lives as they wish. Why should you be special? If anyone is beat to death, they should be punished by the law regardless of the beliefs, gender, or sexual orientation they choose to identify with. So go ahead and rejoice, you were already protected by the law. Get over yourselves!!!
Quick Question: Why does it matter why the killer chose his/her victim? Is killing a person because they had money that you wanted any more or less evil than killing them because they prefered sexual intercourse with people of the same sex or gender?
Please, explain this to me.
This is stupid. So now if you get into a fight with somone and call them a fag or doughnut bumper it’s a hate crime. Stupid politicians pandering to a bunch of deviants.
Too often conservatives use the crux of their religion to deny others the full coverage of the law. Therein lies the problem, they can’t see that there are others who do not share in their beliefs. Government must be for all, regardless of religion. As Obama signs the Hate Crime Bill into law, remember that Bush was against it. Denying others the full protection of the law based on religious dogma. I’m so glad these hate mongers are out of office and may they remain so for a long long while.
It is a very sad day when ANYONE is brutally dragged and murdered the way that Matthew Shepard was bruttaly killed. It is not publisized however the fact that he was murdered because of a drug deal gone wrong NOT because of a hate crime. It is a sad day when a whole community uses a portion of a story to advance their agenda of silencing another group and calls it justice.
What a waste of legislation. This is clearly a crime on every level and the states would prosecute this to the fullest. This is another move by the dems to “act” like they have a political win and to blast the republicans. Look, this is a no brainer that this would be against the law and to now make the fed gov have a law, we accomplished bigger unecessary goverment, wasted federal legislative time, and is just another clear signal that the dems and Obama care little about real change and all about being rock stars. We are so in trouble with him as president.
Really obama? you think this is actually doing anything. Its cleverly concealed i must admit but anyone with an IQ in the double digits can see through your little plan in half a second. NEWFLASH murder is already a federal offense nice try naming the bill after two minorities that were murdered though might make people forget what the whole bill is really about. and assualt is already a crime no matter your race religion sexual orientation gender or any other category you can be put in. This is just a clever disguise to take the focus off the DADT debate that he promised to abolish since he got in office. This kind of stuff only works in idiot america.
I’m waiting for the White male Heterosexual bashin law….How come we dont have one???..I believe Homos are against nature and God….
I agree. If a gay man is murdered, does it really matter if he was murdered for being gay or for the shoes on his feet. Put the murderer away. The end result of the crime is the same.
Interesting. So does that mean if I get assaulted by someone who is gay because I’m straight, is that a hate crime? I also find it interesting that a special law for a certain group of people is seen as a step toward equality. If we’re equal shouldn’t we all live under the same laws?
When one or more minority groups is “DISPROPORTIONATELY” singled out from the rest of society as punching bags, something has to be done to protect these groups. We can’t put sheriffs outside their houses, but we can take an active stance to do something about it and enhancement of the penalties is one solution. No, the majority population is not in need of enhanced penalties. Members of the majority population are the ones doing the bullying. It is the church and the United States Government who has historically demonized homosexuals and finally but slowly the United States Government is changing its ways. But the church still wants permission to drive this minority group into the ground and make sure the American pursuit of happiness is stopped dead in its tracks. When talking about this crime, the conservatives have done a great job of eliminating the key words “disproportionate violence”. Don’t be fooled by Republican opposition to gay hate crimes. They have gladly gone along with hate crime enhancement for other groups like the handicapped. They understand the logic of “disproportionate violence”. Their only sticking point was gays. Yes, if a gay person starts killing white men in Texas just because they are white, then this gay person will be arrested for his violent pattern of dislike of white men. The law works both ways and his punishment will be enhanced because he dislikes white men. That is why they included the word race years ago. Way before we had a protected class of gays. No gays are not just like the rest of us. There are over 1,250 federal laws that are not extended to us because we were born gay. I am 47 years old and I have met thousands of gay people all over the world and not one has said that they are gay because society made them that way or that they chose it. The nature vs. nurture debate is no debate at all within the gay population. There is a large consensus that nature dealt the gay blow.
We shouldn’t be fooled into thinking that the U.S. Congress has completely changed its mind about denying rights to gay people. This bill was a rider on a defense spending bill. That bill needed to pass. Gays were nothing but an afterthought that rode in on the coattails of the real concern of the U.S. Congress which is military spending for our heterosexual brothers and sisters. You can darn well bet it was voted on with a bit of hesitancy. True equality is a million miles away and yet Congress will point to this piecemeal crumb as proof that their hate for gays is subsiding. We should not be nation-building when our own nation is far from complete, far from fair and too far to the right when concerning the subject of red-blooded American gays and lesbians.
Please don’t give any credit to Obama on pushing this through Congress. I watch government closely, and except for a speech to the targeted audience of the Human Rights Campaign, he has not spent any political capital with heterosexual audiences to push this bill. Unless he starts pushing, the moderate Democrats will follow right along with what the mullahs in their districts want, which is a complete stoppage on gay rights. Let us deny them everything in life that matters, marriage, service to country, adoption rights, social security benefits to surviving spouses, hospital visitation rights by their husbands and wives, etc…but God forbid, don’t hit them. Hitting them hard with antiquated policies is all fun and games, but physically hitting them is a no no. We have a screwed up Congress and Democrats are of very little help to millions of gay people who just want equality and to be left alone to serve God, country and family just like everybody else. Heterosexuals think that they have a monopoly on life and love and that there is no way that gays could be feeling as high on life as they are. Congress is intentionally hurting gay adolescents who begin to internalize this institutionalized discrimination. Parents feed off of hate coming from the church and United States Congress and turn against their gay children. The gay suicide rate is unbelievably high and we are doing very little about it. This bill passed by a miracle in the Senate only because it was attached to another bill. Few Senators would have gone out on a limb and spent political capital to vote on a stand alone bill to help a beaten down gay teenager on any American street. God help us all.
I say when they pass that law, make sure “Fundamentalist Christian” isn’t listed for “Hate Crimes”, hell, I say make it 100% legal to kick those guy’s asses.
If we can’t beat down gays in the church, who will we pick on in order to falsely elevate ourselves in the eyes of God? We must have an enemy! When Hitler was asked how he was able corral the entire German population behind him, he said, “Simple, I gave them an enemy”.
If the right wingers who have posted here really think there should be no enhancements on criminal charges, then they should also be in favor of removing all enhancements related to crimes. Let’s start with homicide. You kill someone, you should be charged with murder. We should remove the categories of involuntary homicide, voluntary homicide, premeditated homicide, justifiable homicide, negligent manslaughter, manslaughter, self defense, etc. And then we can move to the “use a gun-go to jail” (the law here in California)charges. The punishment for robbing a store should be the same, regardless of the weapon used. And no enhancements for firing a round into the ceiling, and no enhancements for wounding or killing someone. The robbery charge remains the same. (the wounding or killing would be other charges) Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, based on our judicial history, does it?
We’ve added enhancements to crimes for centuries in this country. Intent has always been a factor in deciding punishment. Hate crime charges are simply charges on top of other crimes, they do not stand on their own. A preacher (since the right loves to trot out this canard) who preaches against homosexuality from his pulpit will not be charged with a hate crime. If he stands there, points to someone in the pews and says “Bob, you must go and assault the girl’s PE coach at the junior high school because she is a lesbian and is recruiting our young women into a life of sin!”, and then Bob goes and does just that, then yes, the preacher might be charged with conspiracy, incitement and a hate crime. But not for simply preaching that homosexuality is a sin, no matter what someone from his congregation might do. But the right wingers don’t want you to think rationally about the issue, they want you to think the liberal “thought police” are coming to haul you away. They’re good about trying to scare their followers. Indeed, that’s the only way they get people to sit in those churches every week… threaten them with eternal hellfire.
Boy, did this item ever bring out the right wing extremists. I’m definitely pleased the legislation passed, although more for symbology than the practical affect. The law will probably only be applied to a handful of cases each year, but in advancing the concept that LGBT’s should be respected and not attacked on someone’s personal whim, is very much appreciated. There is still much to be done, but every step helps.
People who are limited in their way of thinking should keep their opinions to themselves.Although,I guess you really can’t hold them responsible for their actions because they obviously have limited intelligence.Especially people that use God to confirm the valdity of their beliefs. It’s interesting how people can take one word or teaching from the Bible and ignore the rest of it’s content.
“But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we shall All stand before the judgement seat of God.”
Romans 14:10
In that scripture notice the key word ALL.We are All imperfect. Therefore how can you judge someone else?I seriously doubt that these “so called” Christians lead picture perfect lives. In fact some people are so cowardly they can’t even use their real name to stand behind an issue that they care so strongly about.Atleast I assume they have strong beliefs. Why else would you take time out of your busy schedule to leave a comment on website dedicated to informing and uplifting the Gay community…when you are so clearly against it?Maybe it’s because in your sad little world…nobody cares what you think. You have to find an open forum that is tolerant to all opinions no matter how shallow or insignificant.
This Bill represents progress! It really doesn’t matter… Why it came about?…What it will accomplish?…or Who feels they have other issues that need to be addressed? It’s an acknowlegement that there is a need for a change and a step in the right direction.
For all you other people that obviously have other issues.I suggest you get to work on your particular cause.I’ll be sure to visit you at your website hotair.com
Gays have feelings too!
