A Turduck-What?!

What is a turducken, you may ask. It’s simply, a de-boned, whole chicken stuffed into a whole, de-boned duck that is then stuffed into a whole de-boned turkey. It’s origins are still in question, but the most accepted theory is that it originated in Louisiana, around 1985 when a farmer walked into Hebert’s Specialty Meats with the three birds and asked to put them together for him. It was only really known in the South, that is until John Madden started giving away this frankenstein of fowl to the winning NFL football team on Thanksgiving. Now, it’s becoming more popular all over the country, even spawning some variations, such as a pigturducken. I don’t think I have to explain that one.

You can assemble this meat mash-up yourself (click here to see one put together), or purchase one already prepared. There are several places that will ship one to you frozen, including the originators themselves, Hebert’s Specialty Meats. I decided to go local and order one fresh from The Meat Market in Clovis for my family.

The cost is $120 but comes already stuffed and I was told, will serve about 20-25 people. Recalculated by taking my particular family into account, that will feed about 10 of us.

I’m looking forward to taking on this big bird behemoth come Thursday and I’ll make sure to report back to you after I come out of my food induced coma. Until then, hope you and yours have a great Thanksgiving.

JESUS! I hear that its dangerous to try and make one in its stuffed form. Supposedly they should be cooked before you start the stuffing.
