Fresno City College Pride Day…

Fresno City College’s Diversity Club is celebrating its fifth annual FCC Pride Day on Thursday April 15, 2010 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Free Speech Area of the campus. We invite your organization to be involved in our celebration. Last year our Pride celebration was a success, despite a limited amount of planning time, with 18 booths and many other organizations and businesses present. This year’s event will be even bigger than last year’s. Space availability is limited, and is on a first come, first serve basis. Respond quickly if you wish to reserve a space at our celebration.

Anti-Gay City College Instructor Rebuked

March 25, 2010 David Bishop 2 comments

As was talked about on Queer Fresno last month there was an ACLU was officially protesting an instructor at Fresno City College saying, in part, that “lectures by Professor Dr. Bradley Lopez, who teaches an introductory health class, often present religiously-based and anti-gay views as ’science’ or ‘fact.’” Now Fresno City College has issued a rebuke, though no real action has yet to be taken:

Christopher Villa, vice president of student services, issued a report last week on the complaints.

“Dr. Lopez engaged in conduct that could result in the creation of a hostile learning environment by unreasonably interfering with students’ learning by making insulting comments directed at homosexuals,” the report said, noting that Lopez made statements “unrelated to any legitimate course objective.”

In the report, Villa said that Lopez had violated campus regulations prohibiting religious indoctrination “by assigning readings from the Bible, reading the Bible in class, and otherwise relying on the Bible as an authority in the assigned subject matter.”

“Instructors are not required to hide their own religious belief or non-belief, but they may not engage in religious indoctrination as Dr. Lopez did here,” the report said.

Dear Mr President, Sir!

I work two jobs which offer me zero benifits while attending college, along w/working on launching my writing/acting career on the side. I also read to underprivileged children and just the other day I gave money to the guy posted over on shaw/41. I would help the poor more often, however, but  you see I rarely carry cash. I like to use my debit card for my reward points. You understand…right? Anyway, will I be covered under your new healthcare plan? I’m a hard working contributing member of society, why, just last weekend I let my drunk friends pass out on our couch until they sobered up. I do what I can!
I eagerly wait for your response,

ps. I also tried to donate money to the Haiti fund, I really did! But when I texted “haiti’ to 9099 I got an error message in return. I have the draft saved in my phone as proof if you and Mrs. First Lady Michelle Obama would ever like to come over for some pumpkin cheesecake.  I usually don’t serve my pumpkin cheesecake until November, but for you there’s always an exception.  I just ask that you leave the kids back at the White House, we’re in the process of getting our carpets cleaned. Thanks!

The website “For Good Reason” hosts a discussion with James Randi, a renowned skeptic and rational thinker, where Mr. Randi comes out as gay.  Now 81, Mr. Randi discusses his reasons for remaining in the closet until now, his concerns about how it may affect his work, and how his detractors may use this announcement against him.  Check it out at “For Good Reason”.

Mr. Randi’s own site, the James Randi Educational Foundation has the esteemed writer/speaker/skeptic’s own words here.
